In mid-1950s working-class Liverpool, preteen Bud lives with his mother and three older siblings, Kev, John, and Helen, in a loving household shaped by their Catholic faith. His experiences are further influenced by the strictness of his school environment, which often leads him to daydream, and the bullying he endures from classmates, who mock him with taunts of being a "fruit." Bud finds solace in his love for movies, spending much of his time at the cinema, his favorite pastime. Even when alone, he observes the world outside his window, drawing connections between these scenes and his inner thoughts, which continually shape his perspective on life.
